Hi Guys,
I have a simple task but I'm not sure how to do in Origin. I have many data points (dots) measured during strain loading - pls. see the attached picture. I would like to average the data over X-axis increments (e.g. 0.1) as it is shown in the figure,... so I need to average all data in the strain interval (0-0.1),(0.1-0.2), (0.2-0.3), etc.... can it be somehow simply done?

Hi, You can try to copy/paste the following script in classic scipt window
get %c -e enddataset; //get total range for (i=-0.2; i<0.1; i+=0.1) { //loop over the strain intervals set %c -b xindex($(i),%c,2); //set begining index set %c -e xindex($(i+0.1),%c,2); //set ending index sum(%c); type $(sum.mean); //type mean value set %c -b 1; set %c -e enddataset; //reset to initial range };
In classic script window, select all the line and type enter. I didn't test the script but I think it should work.

Hi,
There are 3 problems indeed: 1: your X col is in descending order so set -b and set -e must be swapped
2: I shouldn't have used the i variable in my loop, as it is generally a reserved variable. Replacing it with ii is better
3: in the last iteration of the loop, xindex($(ii+0.1),%c,2), ie xindex(0,AE.Power,2) is upposed to return the closest index of X=0. As the 0 value is never crossed, the xindex command return 0, so the sum command won't work. As a workaround, you can try to replace you very first x value (-6E-4) with 0.

first of all thanks a lot for all the time you are spending with my issue,... I was trying to do something with it today, but even if I replaced the first x value (-6E-4) with 0 it doens't work properly,... see below the mean.sum is always: 0.016036136007967

I've tried to change "set %C -e" to the temporary set as: "set %C -es" and the same for "set %C -b" but it didn't help,... but it might be one of the problems?,... |

Hi Ondrej, Antoine,
In Origin8 we provide an XF reducexy to achieve such a kind of average.
But the tool will search the interval within the X data itself.
So for your case, before running our tool, you need to add several fake data into your source data first: 0 0 -0.1 0 -0.2 0 -0.3 0
You can simply append them at the end of your data.
In general, you will need to add the end point numbers of the intervals you want to count as fake X data.
That is to say, you want to count data within intervals [0, 1], (1, 2], (2,3], you will need to add fake data: 0 0 1 0 2 0 3 0
As to your example, suppose you data is placed in col(A)&col(B), run following command in script window (You can run "reducexy -h" to see more help on this tool):
reducexy iy:=col(2) dx:=0.1 method:=ave
You will get a worksheet containing the result, which is similar to what Antoine posted. (The small difference should be due to the return value from xindex().)

thanks for your help, I think that the script is pretty good and I don't need to add any fake data,... I modified it little bit but the whole idea is the same, this works for me in OriginPro 8 for calculating the "mean" and the "median":

however, I still have a problem with assigning the book:worksheet to the %C variable. I've tried following: "%c=AEsmall_RMS.4@2" and also "%c=[AElarge]Filt.RMS.0.001!RMS.4" but it doesn't seem to work,... I have to always manually activate the sheet I want to work with,... I'm pretty sure I'm doing some stupid mistake,...???

You won't success to assign anything to %c: it is a reserved variable that is constantly refreshed and holds the current active dataset.
You can try: range myrange=AEsmall_RMS.4@2; get myrange -e enddataset; ....
you can address whatever dataset you like to myrange with the following syntax [bookname]sheetname!colname |
