I have the following problem:

I have two sets of data (dh2o and dt), measured independently. However, they are related to each other by a linear relationship (i.e. when I plot dh2o against dt, I get a straight line (more or less)).

Now I want to plot both properties against time (the data is from measurements done every few seconds) using two layers. The second layer now should be linked to the first via the linear relationship I get from the dh2o against dt plot. In the "Link Axes Scales" box, there is the custom link feature but this doesn't seem to be what I need. As I understand it, you can give a range of Y values that are plotted in the child layer in terms of the parent layer. What I need is to give a relationship like "let Y(Layer2) be 0.03+0.11*Y(Layer1)".

Is it possible to do such a thing? If not, I don't understand how the custom link feature could be useful.

After some thorough thinking I too thought I could do it like you told me.

Finally I managed to get the link right, but it seems that the custom link feature is buggy!?

What happens is: If I set both the Y1= and Y2= boxes, only the Y1= relationship is executed, i.e. only the start of layer 2's y-axes is rescaled in the right way.

The Y2= relationship is ignored and the end of layer 2's y-scale is set equal to layer 1's y-scale (i.e. Y2=Y2 is executed instead).

To get the layers displayed right, I have to go to layer1 Y-Axes properties, enter a new From or To value (in fact it seems to be OK just to reenter one of the current values) and layer 2 is finally rescaled in the right way...

Well, I consider this to be a bug!? The changes in the custom link box should certainly be executed in the right way for both the From and To values. The To value being set to the same as Layer 1 is certainly not what most people want.

Is this a known bug? If not, do Microcal's tech people read this stuff here or should I mail a seperate bug report?

I am working with Origin 4.1 16bit under windows 3.11, and everything is
working alright. So it seems to be be little bug which you have discovered.
I think microcal reads this forum, but it would be better if you email a
bugreport to them. I don't know if you know, there exist a patch-file
for origin 4.1 on the ftp-server of microcal (microcal.com /pub/patch2.exe).
It could also be that they have fixed this bug already.
