Hello everyone

I've been trying to plot a curve with double x axis. Here is my data:
X1, X2 and Y, where x2=f(x1)

First I plot Y vs X1, then I want to display X2 accordingly on the upper X axis. How can I do this, please help.

Best Regards,
Panwen

Hello panwen,

If your axis X1 and X2 can be mathematically related, this is quite simple. From the layer properties you select the X linking (to the first/previous) layer, then in the boxes X1 and X2 you enter the formula for converting the upper and lower limits...

Thank you, DataConv

Actually, X1 and X2 is not mathmatically related. They are just two columns of data. It's very hard to link them with a simple formula. Is there still someway to do this?

Hi:

You may need two linked layers. This tutorial may help.

Thanks

Hi larry
The tutorial helps a lot. I've tried under its direction, but you know, X1 and X2 is not mathematically related. So it makes very hard to link the two layers.

The following image is my experiment data. there are 3 columns, first two are X1 and X2. Column c is Y. I want X2 to be displayed on the upper x axis accordingly.

Pan

Hi Pan,

You can do it the following way:
1> Plot column C versus A
2> Make sure to set the scale/increments for the bottom X axis so that each of your X values are represented (set range to say 0.5 to 10.5 and set increment to 1)
3> Turn on the top X axis (you can do this by double clicking the bottom X axis, then going to Tick Labels tab and selecting Top from the left panel
4> Assign the tick labels for top to be Tick-indexed dataset, and assign column B as shown in picture

Then you can format the B column to show less digits etc and the labels will show what the column displays.

The catch here is to keep the bottom X axis to represent each value in your X dataset. If for example you change bottom X axis increment to 2, or you have x values that are not evenly spaced, it will not work.

P.S. I typed in only 10 rows of your data...

Hi Easwar

Thank you very much.

I've tried your method and it worked when I set the increment to 1 as you mentioned. But there are too many experiment data in there(about 8000), it did not work when I set the increment to 1000. Is there any solution for this? Otherwise, I could only input text on the upper axis.

I send my data file again, please check the attachment.

Best Regards,
Pan

You can use "Text from dataset" as the tick label Type. For each major tick label, Origin checks what the tick label value of numeric type would be (using the settings on the Scale tab). It then uses that numeric value as a row number, and displays the cell value in the selected data set at that row number for the tick label.

So in your case, if you delete the first row of (0,0) this will work.

Hi to all,

I have the same problem, two X colums which are not simply mathematically related (and their values are also not consecutive as the column A in the example).
I have tried the solution given here, but my problem is that not all the worksheet with data are shown in the dataset drop-down menu, from the Tick Labels tab.

Does somebody know why not all the pages are shown, or how to active the worksheets I need in that dataset menu? I must say I have many folders in the project, maybe that's the problem.

Thanks in advance!

Not sure the problem without looking into your project. Please send the OPJ to us and we will have a look. In the email, please tell us your serial number and Origin version, and describe which graph you were working on and which column you want to select.

Thanks

Hi to all,
I am using OriginPro SR0, v.8.1.10.86
I come back to this issue because I tried several times to add a second X axis in my graph, starting from two X dataset not related with a simple mathematical relation.
I tried to follow several tutorials and also the suggestions in this page, but it did not work (in reality I am not an advanced user).

Could please help me in sorting out this issue?
Moreover, I would like to say that choosing "text from dataset" The tick labels disappear...
Below you can see an example of the data.
Thank you in advance.

Hi Mara,

You might be considering either graph scaling at left or right.

Graph1 at left has the linear axis scale, and the data points of X1 lie on it, and X2 tick labels on the top X
correspond to the major ticks on the bottom X. On the other hand, in Graph2, you want to preserve both
tick labels at bottom and at top as you provide.

If you want like Graph1, you need to know the interpolated values of X2 based on the major tick positions of X1.

Here, you run the "Interpolate/Extrapolate Y from X" for the major tick position (column E) based on
the mapping between columns A(X1) and D(X2); then, you can set the tick labels as the Tick-Indexed Dataset
from the interpolated result.

If you want to make like Graph2, first you simply set the major ticks "By Dataset"(if your version is old,
this may not be supported), and set your tick labels at both bottom and top from the corresponding dataset.

I hope that the either case matches to your objective.

P.S.

Another possibility may be to place the given tick labels equally spaced. You can change the X column format to
Text type, which means that the numerical values of the tick labels have no meaning, but only internally 1, 2, 3, ...
Then, you can set the Type of axis tick labels to "Text from Dataset":

Hi,

I have a similar problem: two x axis that are not related mathematically, but share the same output (values on the y axis).

When interpolating and adding a top X axis with "Tick-indexed dataset", I get tick labels that have decimal places. I would rather have whole numbers in both X axis (bottom and top), and I don't mind if the position of their ticks match.

I know that I need to create a new layer, but since there is no mathematical function that can link both layers, the X axis are never aligned correctly.

Could you help me with this? Here is a picture of my data. It should be pretty simple to do, but I can't seem to figure it out.

Hello,

If you are using Hideo's suggest on 04/16/2015, you need to put the expected bottom tick label values in a column and then do an interpolation. After interpolation, double click the column header of newly created column.

Set Digits to Set Decimal Places=
Decimal Number to 0.

Then the top tick labels will show as round numbers.

To show bottom tick label as whole number:
Double click the bottom tick labels. On Tick Labels tab-> Display tab., Since Type is Numeric, you can set Display: Custom. Then set Custom Format as .0 to show 0 decimal places.

thanks, Snow

For visitors to this post,

A blog article about the double-X graph, "How to Make a Neat Double-X Graph" has been published.
It classifies the types of double-X, and the instructions how to create the type of the graph.

Hi all,
I encounter the same problem. I've tried the method that Larry gave to plot a graph with two x-axis details that are not mathematically related. Also, I intend to use the corresponding double x-axis to do peak fitting. My purpose is to abstract the values of temperature, time and y-axis info (in this case da/dt) after deconvolution of a multiple-peak graph. As shown in image 2, the independent variable will only show the temperature data but I want to abstract the corresponding time data for mathematically calculation. I will attached the related matter here. Thank you.

Hi,

Peak Analyzer can only take care of one dataset at a time. It seems that you only fit dataset of Temperarture vs Weight. Please select column B and C and do peak fit once again.

Thanks,
Amanda
