Excellent software, I have a problem at the moment though -

With a graph open on screen, a right click often causes the message :
'This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down'
Clicking the 'Details' option informs us that 'ORIGIN50 caused an
exception 10H in module OK50.dll

This problem also manifests itself upon a double click on the graph window.

Any ideas?

Chris,

Thank you for your kind words regarding Origin. The nature of the crashes that you are experiencing and the fact that I can not reproduce the same crashes on my computer make me strongly suspect that the problem is related to your computer system's setup. I have some suggestions that may remedy the situation.

First, we have had some reports of Origin 5.0 crashing when incompatible versions of two DLLs are installed in the Windows 95 C:\Windows\System folder. To check the version of a DLL you right-click on the DLL, select Properties, and then click on the Version tab. The file MFC40.DLL should be version 4.1.6139 (or later) and the file MSVCRT40.DLL should be version 4.10.6038 (or later). If either of these DLLs are not the correct version then you should cut and paste the offending DLL(s) to a backup folder and then re-install Origin. You must cut, not copy, for this procedure to work and you should paste the cut file(s) into a backup folder in case some other application needs the deleted version. You can generally install Origin on top of itself without any problems but you should back up any personal files for safety. The Origin installation program will put the correct version of each DLL it needs in your \System folder if it doesn't find it already there. After re-installing you should once again check to see that you have the proper versions of the above mentioned DLL's installed on your computer.

Once you are sure that you have the correct versions of the DLLs installed check to see if Origin works properly. If not, then most likely your troubles are the result of a printer or video driver conflict. Driver manufacturers sometimes bypass certain Windows 95 routines to increase the speed or performance of their devices (printers, video boards, etc...). This bypassing can cause applications that use these Windows routines to crash in unexplainable places. These problems occur more frequently in graphically intensive applications, like Origin, that tend to heavily utilize the features of these devices.

Consequently, as a second step I would check to see if your printer driver is causing the problem. To check your printer driver you must set your default printer to the Apple LaserWriter (a printer driver that is known not to cause problems). To do this, open the Printers folder in the Windows Control Panel, double-click on the Add Printer icon, and then select Apple as the Manufacturer and Apple LaserWriter as the printer. You must specify the Apple LaserWriter as the Default Printer for this test to be effective (you can reset the default back to your printer after the test). Please note that you can create a printer icon for the Apple LaserWriter even though you don't have one as long as you specify "File" for "Print to Port." Once again, check to see if Origin works properly. If this fixes the problem then most likely you have a printer driver conflict and you will need to get a different printer driver (one designed for your printer) from Windows 95 or from your printer manufacturer's website.

Finally, if the above procedures do not work I would check to see if your video driver is causing the problem. Double-click on the System icon in your Windows Control Panel and then select the Performance tab. Click on the Graphics button and move the Hardware Accelerator slide all the way to the left (None). After Restarting Windows, check to see if Origin works correctly. If so, you most likely have a video driver conflict. You can either leave the Hardware Accelerator slide in the None position, slide it one or two notches to the right and test again (you must reboot for each setting), or get a different video driver from Windows 95 (use standard VGA or SVGA). You might also be able to download an updated version of your video card's driver from your video board manufacturer's website.

If none of the above procedures fix your problems please contact your Origin technical support representative.

Once again, thank you for your post.
