Hello,
Im using origin (several version, at least 5.0 SR2) in a network area. In combination with WIN95 no problem concerning saving files occured. But since we changed to NT4.0 Origin crashes sometimes during saving.
The open file itself is destroyed, so there is no chance to continue work, but You have to start from the total beginning. This is nerve-racking and costs a lot of time. To locate the problem I switched over to WIN95 again with the result that the problem disapears. Does somebody knows something about the reasons for this different behaviour with WIN NT and WIN95 and can help?

Origin continually undergoes extensive testing so that Microcal Software can confidently provide a high quality, reliable product.
However, software and hardware configurations can sometimes cause problems in any application, including Origin.
When you are experiencing a crash while using Origin, you should contact your dealer that provides your Origin support, or if your Origin dealer doesn't provide support or you are a US or Canadian customer, you should contact Microcal Software's Technical Support Department.
The type of information you should provide your support representative follows:

  • The exact Origin version - avaliable by typing @V= and pressing ENTER in the Script window.

  • The version of Windows AND Explorer. Right-click on My Computer and select Properties.

  • Details about your video card and drivers.

  • Details about your default printer and driver(s).

  • Network considerations: The properties of the icon used to launch Origin, the type of Origin installation being used (Client, Server) and whether you are logged in as a user or administrator.

  • A detailed description about what you had been doing before the crash.

To troubleshoot on your own before seeking direct support, you can use our searchable Tech Knowledge Base. Be sure to select System Problems in the Select a Category drop-down list.

I have used Origin 3.5, 3.73, 4.1, and the new Version 5 demo, and every version has had this problem. You are not alone! I use only NT 4.0 SP3, so I can't tell you if it's only an NT problem. But I can tell you that I have used it on several different machines, and it does not appear to be machine specific. I think it's just poor coding.

Doesn't it make you feel secure to know that during any save it might crash? So much for saving often!

Try to turn on the backup function in Origin, then you should not loose the file completely (only your last modifications). (I did experience problems in the 5.0 Beta version with this function, the backup setting was lost, but I think it was fixed in the final 5.0 release). I am running with this turned on, but I do not have enough experience with the 5.0 version to comment if the saving problem you describe affects me.

We have experienced network saving problems with all type of application if we have used NFS-mounted drives under Windows NT 4.0 Service pack 3. (Both with Interdrive-software package and the Intergraph version of the NFS-software). For this reason, we try to store data on Windows NT servers where we do not need the NFS software add -on.

We have gotten reports from some NT4 users about the crash-while-saving problem, but the information has not been detailed enough to understand the problem. We have not reproduced the problem here on our test systems. The problem is not confined to Origin and seems to occur more frequently with specific users or specific sites. This seems to indicate that it might be a system problem (many companies setup all their computers with the same configuration and a system problem would appear to be machine-independent).
If we could identify the precise cause then we could come up with a solution. To that end, here are some questions and suggestions:

  • Are you logged in as Administrator or a username? 1
  • What file system is in use? (FAT, NTFS, .. ?) 2

  • Is the Save Backup option ON or OFF? 3

  • Does the crash only occur with Graphs or complex Graphs? 4
  • Does the crash occur with both Save and SaveAs? 5
  • Are you using the Explorer dialog or Origin dialog for Open/Save? 6

You should first eliminate the possibility that you are experiencing a video or printer driver conflict.
Try setting up an Apple Laserwriter as your default printer and boot up in SAFE mode to test for driver conflicts.

1 The programmers need this information.

2 See Helge Steen's previous post..

3 The programmers need this information.

4 This may actually be a video driver or printer driver conflict. See above.

5 A report from a user indicates that SaveAs may be more stable than Save.

6 A report from a user indicates that Origin's dialog may be more stable than Explorer's. To turn on Origin's dialog (turn off Explorer's), open the Script window and type @X=0 and press Enter.

If you do get a crash, then the programmers would like to know the module and address where the crash occurs (click the Details button) and they would like to know the values of any keywords in the [HINST] sections of ORIGIN.INI, ORIGIN50.INI and OTB.INI. Other useful information:

  • Windows version
  • Internet Explorer version (if installed)
  • Video card and driver
  • Printer and driver

Origin 5.0 user, logged into a Win NT server as a username running a single-machine (non-networked) copy of Origin. I don't know my FAT from my NFTS, but I can say my very pretty graph had four curves, three with x-error bars. I believe myself to be using the Origin dialog box. Both Save As and Save give me the same result.

All my symptoms seem to be the same as everyone else, except that my machine DOESN'T crash - Origin proclaims all disks full, and erases previous work w/o warning. Backups were not checked. The work is gone - how to prevent for the future?

We had a guy at work who, kept complaining that Origin was destroying files. I'd give him a file and just upon opening it the file would become corrupted. We just figured it was his problem. Worked fine for us.
So then a couple of months ago it started happening to me on my office computer (NT) upon saving the application would crash, and the file would be destroyed. But Origin worked fine in the lab (Windows 95). So I used the lab computer.
Today we tried fixing Origin on my computer, and we read the postings. Seems I inherited the hardware from that other guy who was having all the problems with Origin. Including his video card. We downloaded new drivers for the video card, and so far I haven't crashed.... I'll tell you if I do, because this has been an incredibly frustrating error.
