I often make graphs where the clip data to frame option in the layer format control box is enable. When I copy a graph which to e.g. word, this works fine, as long as the clipped data consists of lines. When i clip a color contour plot to the frame, it looks ok in origin, but appears unclipped in word! How to solve this one?
many thanks

Paul,

I was able to reproduce this bug in Origin and I have reported it to our developers. If a contour plot extends beyond the layer frame the portion of the contour plot extending beyond the layer frame is included in the metafile created by the menu option Edit:Copy Page. This is true even if the Clip Data to Frame checkbox is checked in the Layer Properties dialog box and the graph appears as it should within Origin.

Rather than rescaling a contour plot and then clipping the data to the layer frame to show only a desired portion of the contour plot, you might want to try copy/pasting the relevant portion of the matrix you are interested in to a new sub-matrix and then plotting the new sub-matrix at full scale. This is somewhat involved but it is the only work around that I could envision.

Gary

Additional Comment: Eureka!!! Why didn't I think of this earlier?

I have found that exporting the graph as a JPEG or BMP file (select the File:Export Page menu option in Origin when the graph window is active) and then inserting these files into Word (select the Insert:Picture:From File menu option in Word) is quite an effective work around to this bug.

I found this out myself too, but I only seem to get bad resolution pictures. How can I get equal resolution to wmf format when exporting a bmp or jpeg?

thanks

Paul

My understanding of this issue is that JPG is a raster based image (stores the colors of each pixel in the image) whereas WMF is a vector based image (stores equations describing the image) so that there are bound to be differences in the image characteristics produced by each type of file. However, if you increase the JPG image resolution (X and Y pixels) you should be able to approach the resolution of the WMF image although the JPG file may get prohibitively large.

As a side note, the original problem of the WMF file including clipped data should be
fixed in our next release version.
