Origin Ver. and Service Release (Select Help-->About Origin):
8.1 SR3
v8.1.34.90 Government

Operating System:
Windows XP

I have created an XYZ contour graph to show the amount of stain in a log (ecology stuff). The outside of the log has been converted to angles (y-axis), and the converted to "sections" 1-7 along the length of the log (x-axis). Stain is measured as a percentage (z-axis).

The data was entered as follows:

Section Angle of Segment Stain
1 157.5 100
1 90 98.5
...
7 270 100
7 202.5 100

Which gave me the following output:

http://www.originlab.com/ftp/forum_and_kbase/Images/Contour.pdf

I would like to know how the intensity of colour is worked out in the program. Is it the mean stain for each point (section x angle)?

Many thanks!

Sorry the data was meant to look more like this (my spaces disappeared from the original post!!). I can't seem to get the spacing working, so the commas indicate the next column:

Section, Angle of Segment, Stain
1, 157.5, 100
1, 90, 98.5
...
7, 270, 100
7, 202.5, 100

Hi James,

Origin creates an XYZ contour plot by the methods of "triangulation" and interpretation. Please refer to the information at:
http://www.originlab.com/www/helponline/Origin/en/UserGuide/Creating_Contour_Graphs.html#Triangulation
This page also includes the references for details.
The colors assigned between contour lines simply represent the value range determined by the number of levels (or the increment). You can set the number of levels as many as you like by pressing "Level" header in the Colormap/Contours tab in Plot Details dialog so you can visualize the interpolated value as precise as you like.

Is the above information what you were looking for?
