I am using LabGPIB under Origin 3.5
devID=gp.open() does not return a device ID. Also, gp.receive() and gp.send() don't work (gp.read() and gp.write, do work).
General question: can I run LabGPIB under Origin 4 (5, 6)?

Origin data acquisition modules were only available as 16-bit compatible software. This means they could only run on Windows 3.1x systems. When Windows 95 was released there were numerous problems porting the data acquisition software to the new 32-bit operating systems. This was in part due to the unstable nature of the available 32-bit drivers, as well as previous problems with the earlier drivers. The commands that you mention do not work are known. They are due to incompatibilities with the drivers used by the hardware manufactures. For this reason it was decided not to continue manufacturing or support of data acquisition. Unfortunately, there is no upgrade path for your LabGPIB and it will not work with later versions of Origin.
