I am trying to create some graphs for a publication, and they all need to be of a consistent size and style. I need them to be 9 cm wide, with consistent font and symbol sizes etc. When I create two graphs separately, and define the page sized as having a 9 cm width, the font and symbol sizes seem completely different between the two. One will have a size 10 font, that is bigger than the seconds size 20.

Also, the symbol size in the legend is sometimes much larger than the symbols in its chart. I have managed to change this manually using the code but this is annoying - how can you get this to update itself?

See examples below for the inconsistent font sizes:

Thanks

Hi jamesmccarthy,

In a multi-layer graph like yours, layers are shrunk, and fonts are scaled accordingly (in "Scale With Layer Frame" mode as default). So, a set font size, say 18, means if in fixed size factor is 1. This set font size and actual font size are displayed in the Status Bar when you select the text label. (at least in my Origin 8.6. Not sure in Origin 8.1.)

I think this default is appropriate because when you change the layer size, the attached text labels follow the change of the size. But, user needs to be aware the set value and the actual.

If you like always have the font size as actual, you can set the fixed factor to 1 do by the following three methods:

1) If you want to set so for individual text label, you can attach it to the page, instead of to the layer. You can do so by right-click the label, and choose "Programming Control" flyout, then select "Page" for "Attach To" option. (Axis tick labels and axis titles are always attached to the layer. So, you cannot apply this method to them.)

2) If you want to set so for all labels (including axis tick labels and titles) in a specific layer, open the Plot Details dialog for the layer ("Format: Layer Properties" menu), choose "Display" tab, and select "Fixed Factor" and set it to 1.

3) If you want to set so for all labels in the graph page (i.e. all layers), open the Layer Management tool (under "Graph" menu), select all layers in the upper left panel by CTRL+click, choose Display tab, and select "Fixed Factor" and set it to 1 for the Scale Elements.

Of course, the above settings can be saved as the graph template ("File: Save Template As" menu) if you want it as default for that graph type.

Hope the above explanation is clear enough and helpful.
