I'm trying to produce a vector plot but I'm having some problem. I'm using XYAM format for the plot and I have some points at which the magnitude of the arrow should be zero.
However I still see the arrowhead at this points while I shouldn't see it.
Any idea on how to solve this problem?
And how to have a ticker line for those point at which the arrow should be there?
Also is it possible to add a little perspective to this plot?
Thanks for all your help
Fabio

Hi Fabio,

On the Vector tab of the Data level in the Plot Details dialog box there is a setting for placing the vector head at the Head, Tail, or Midpoint of the vector. I will suggest that our developers add "None" and "None if amplitude is 0" options.

I also have other suggestions that will work right now:

1. Duplicate the worksheet, delete the rows of data that have amplitudes of 0, and then plot this modified data (I understand this may not be acceptable but this is the easiest method).
2. Masking is not officially supported for Vector plots but try this fun little trick:

Select the View:Toolbars menu item and enable the Mask toolbar. Highlight the worksheet rows of data that have an amplitude of 0, and then click the Mask Range or Mask point toggle buttons. Plot only the XY columns as a Scatter plot and note the masked data points. With the Scatter plot active click the Hide/Show masked data points button. The Vectors with 0 amplitude will become hidden.

To make vector lines thicker specify a larger Width setting on the Vector tab in the Plot Details dialog box.

To add perspective print your graph on paper that has a wide angle view of the Grand Canyon! I am just kidding...sorry...must be I need a vacation...Try selecting the Format:Page menu item, select the Display tab in Plot Details, and then specify Blue for Base Color, Cyan for Gradient Color, and Top Left for Gradient (or any variation on this theme).

I hope this is helpful.

Hi Fabio,

I had one other idea...I once created a plot similar to what you want using an XYZ Trajectory plot. You have to separate the "vectors" with missing values (2 rows of XYZ data followed by a row of missing values) and then turn off "Connect lines accross missing values" and "drop lines". Except for the fact that you must compute your own Z values this is pretty easy to do using the Plot Details dialog box. Unfortunately, it has the draw back that there are no vector heads but you can control line thickness, color, etc.

I hope this is more helpful. Other people have also requested an XYZ-XYZ Vector plot and I will add you to the list. Thanks for a good suggestion!

Hi Gary,
thanks a lot for your suggestions.
What I've done so far is to use XYXY format instead of XYAM format: with a couple of labtalk lines the conversion is immediate and I don't have the problem with arrows appearing where they shouldn't be. I've never used masking functions but I'll look into that.
What I'd like to see is something like a "fancy arrow" instead of just having a ticker line, I'm not sure what the overall effect will be though.
Your last suggestion about using a gradient in the page is great but I still have to try the special paper you suggets: any idea where I can buy it? :-)
Anyway I't would be nice if we could add a fictious Z axis and have some perspective.
Thanks for your great tips
Fabio

Vector plot with should not draw points with M=0, so it is a bug in the software. Looks like we will need Origin6.1 SR1 that will fix this and a few other problems. This is easy to fix but we will need to give it a couple of month before SR1 can be released. Thanks for pointing out this problem to us.
