Dear Origin users,

I want to plot a dataset with a bottom x-axis which is for example 1/temperature and on the top x-axis the temperature scale. Using the link layers doesn't work since this allows only a linear transformation. I manage to do it by adding an empty layer but that doesn't change when I change the bottom x-axis. My question is, is it possible to make a linked layer with the inverse of the bottom x-axis?

Kind regards,
Jeroen Kalkman

It is possible to link the axes as you wish. First plot your data in layer one. To simplify the example, this will put the temperature on the bottom X-axis. Next you will want to select Edit: New Layer: (Linked) Top X + Right Y. This will add a second layer. Once this layer is created you will need to link the axes in the proper relationship. Hold down the [CTRL] key while double-clicking on the layer 2 Icon. This will open the layer 2 Plot details dialog box. Select the "Link Axes Scales" tab. You will want to link the Y-axis Straight (1 to 1). You will need to do a custom link of the X-axis. For the value in the X1 box you will type in "1/X1" and in the X2 box you will enter 1/X2.

You have now linked layer two to layer one, so select OK. Please note that you may have negative numbers on the upper layer two X-axis. Having the layer one X-axis starting at zero or a negative number would cause that. The start point on the layer one X-axis must be greater than zero. You must change the layer one X-Axis start point to a number greater than 0 by double-clicking on the bottom X-axis and changing the start value to greater than 0.

The final step you must take is to set the layer two top X-axis to a reciprocal scale. You do this by making sure layer two is active and selecting Format: Axes: X Axis, from the Main Origin menu. Change the Scale type from Linear to Reciprocal.

If you make a change to the start or end point of the Layer one bottom X-axis, the reciprocal scale on the top in Layer 2 will change proportionally. It is allowed to change the number or frequency of the Major or Minor ticks in layer two, but you do not want to change the start or the end point of the layer two axes. This will break the link. You must always make changes only to the layer one axes values. The link will automatically set the values in layer two.
