Hi all,
Recent new user to originlab and looking to produce some scatter plots for some data I have. The data is diving data: Depth (m) and Duration (s). I would like to plot a scatter plot of Duration (y-axis) as a function of depth (x-axis). I can already do this simply by plotting all the data points in one graph, however I would prefer to be able to split the data so that it shows the mean values of duration for every 10m depth interval.
I can do this in Excel the long handed way, by for example selecting all those duration values which correspond to a value of 0 to <= 10 m, then selecting all those which correspond to >10 to <=20 m etc. Then I could calculate their means and plot them against 10 m depth intervals.
Is there a short hand way to do this in Originlab? Perhaps I would need to use a code?

Dear William,
You can do this in Origin by going to Analysis: Data Manipulation: Reduce by Group: Open Dialogue.
In this dialog you can choose how you want to group your data, what statistic you want to perform on the data and which column you would like to do this to. For example here I made up 40 values of random numbers for duration and had the following settings:
This gave me the following results:
Also, in case this is a feature you will be using often, you can save the dialog settings as a theme so you do not have to keep changing the settings every time you do it. To do this click on the triangle button on the top right of the dialog box:
Select Save As..., then type in a memorable Theme name:
Now every time you wish to run this analysis, simply hilight the columns you wish to perform the analysis on and go to:
It is possible to save dialog themes for almost every dialog in Origin. Hope this helps!

Additionally,
In case your data is not evenly spaced for depth like mine is in the last example, you can use Statistics:Descriptive Statistics: 2D Frequency Count/Binning: Open New Dialog, in this dialog I put in the following settings:
The results will output as following:
Remember you save this dialog theme for future use as well. Also the average is calculated for all the numbers in forms of 0<=Bin1<10, 10<=Bin2<20 etc etc. So 10 is not counted in the first bin. |

Thanks for the advice. It certainly looks like this method could work and is what I have been looking for.. However my institution does not seem to have OriginPro which it seems is needed for this particular data manipulation function.
Looks like I will have to pester them for an upgrade!!

Dear Will,
Actually this type of Statistics is available on just regular Origin for the more recent versions of Origin. You can find out more about that here:
http://originlab.com/index.aspx?go=Products/Origin/Statistics
(Only the features with the Pro symbol next to them need OriginPro).
I don't know what version you are using but if its an older version, that might be why it is not available to you in regular Origin.

Hi Zahra,
I am using Origin 9.1 (Academic). However when I click on Analysis: Data Manipulation, I am only offered two options:
Subtract Reference Data... and Reduce Duplicate X Data...
I've tried both of those options but neither seem to bring up the interface that you have shown in your previous comments?

Hi Will,
I may have confused you by giving you two ways of doing this, so to clarify:
I outlined two ways you could do the above analysis:
For even spaced X data-> Analysis: Data Manipulation: Reduce by Group (ORIGINPRO ONLY)
For not evenly spaced X data -> Statistics: Descriptive Statistics: 2D Frequency Count/Binning (REGULAR ORIGIN FEATURE)
(FYI to see this options, you should have a workbook active, not a graph)
