Operating System: Windows 7 and 8.1, 64 bit
Hello everyone,
me and my colleagues have been looking for a solution for the following problem:
It seems to be impossible for Origin (I tried version 9.1 and 2015) to embed the font "Symbol" in a pdf file when the export graph feature is used.
Symbol is used for Greek letters such as alpha by default when using the highlighted button or pressing CTRL+G in a text environment.
All other fonts are embedded in a pdf if the highlighted selection is made in "export graph" dialogue (it is in german, but I guess it simply states "embedded" in the english version:
If the exported pdf is then opened in acrobat reader (or foxit or whatever you like), all fonts used except for symbol are embedded (I just used Charter here).
It seems as if Origin "forgets" to embed Symbol as well. I thought about possible workarounds. They only way I found was to insert the greek letters as a special character from other fonts, e.g. Times New Roman. However, using these unicode letters results in a "type 3" font beeing exported. This means that it is not scaleable anymore.
I'm sorry if this problem has been discussed here before. The only thread I could find was this http://www.originlab.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4408. The problem is not exactly the same, but it was recommended printing the document with Distiller. Since I do not have Distiller, I printed with FoxitPDF instead, which worked, i.e. all fonts are embedded (foxit produced CID fonts, which is unnecessary and adds to to existing fonts already embedded, but...). However, it is rather complicated to get the printPDF to right size.
Can anyone think of an easier way? |

Hi,
I am sorry that this is a bug in Origin. We have a item, ORG-9983, in our bug tracking database for the problem.
However, as we use a third party DLL to export PDF, what we can do now is to wait for the third-party dll provider to fix the issue.
I am wondering whether it is possible to export the graph as EPS or EMF to work around the problem?

Hi,
why does it take so long to solve this bug? It is quite annoying and the bug is already seven (!) months old.
Thanks a lot in advance |

Hi Sven and others who reported this issue,
Symbol is one of 14 fonts that are built-in fonts in PDF. In other words Symbol font is already available within PDF, so we do not embed it in our exported file even if that check box is checked.
I tested with a variety of other fonts, and they all showed up in the properties dialog for me.

Hi,
thanks for the quick answer.
I understand that symbol is meant to be a standard font. Nevertheless, pretty much all programs generating pdfs do embed symbol if it is used. Thus, the standard is somewhat degrading and I came across a number of pdf viewers that don't have symbol in-build as it is a bit more exotic. So, I wonder whether Origin could convert to the unofficial standard of not treating symbol as a given in the pdfs but embed in pdf export.
Thank you, Sven

Hi Easwar,
I guess I have the same problem. When I have my symbol non-italic, it is detected in pdf as symbol with type 1, but when I have the same symbol in italic, then pdf detects it as type 3 and in print the symbol is printed in bold. Is there a solution to this problem? I need to use /eta which I found only in Symbol font and Time New Roman. But since my whole document is in LM Roman font and I don't want to use Times new Roman.
Thanks! |
