Origin Ver. and Service Release (Select Help-->About Origin): 2017 Operating System: Win10
List of data in scatter plot used to show X and Y variables, but this Origin version only shows the y variable. Does this mean we can only use columns designated as "x" as the x variable? This is a throw-back to ancient versions of Origin.
I can't describe how annoying it is to have to relearn simple operations I've been doing for at least a decade.

Hi,
Do you want to show the labels that use both X and Y values of the datas as illustrated?
1. Double click the scatter plot to open Plot Details dialog, 2. Go to Label tab, and find Label Form item 3. Select (X, Y) from the drop-down list 4. Click OK button
You will see the changes.
Hope it helps.
Regards, Yuki OriginLab

No, I just want to use a different column as the x-values; however, only the y-values are displayed. It's similar to Origin many years ago, when you were forced to set a column as "x" in order to use it as the abscissa. |

Hello,
Since Origin 9, we can change an existing plot's X data by right click a plot and choose Change X context menu. See http://originlab.com/Index.aspx?go=Support/VideoTutorials&pid=2000
Layer Contents always lists Y data only. Plot Setup dialog shows both X and Y. You can right click layer icon at upper left corner and choose Plot Setup dialog, which opens Plot Setup dialog which allows you to change both X and Y.
Note: In some old versions, double click layer icon opens Plot Setup dialog instead of Layer Contents dialog. In 2017, u can change what is the default behavior. Right click layer icon and choose "Double click to open Plot Setup".
Plotting XY data is still the same as before. When plotting new data, 1. by default, if you select a column with (Y) designation, it will plot it against the (X) column on the left. If there is no (X) column on the left, it will plot against row numbers.
2. If you don't select any thing in worksheet and click the plot type, Plot Setup dialog will open, allowing you to select which is X and which is Y.
Thanks, Snow |

Also could you let me know which dialog you are talking about that only lists Y data?

That solves my problem! I was double clicking the icon, whereas with Origin 2017 I need to right click. Thanks for your help. |
