I'm having problems when I check for updates from the Help menu in Origin 7.5 SR1...
1. When I ran the command his morning at home I saw the command error: "opack.something is an illegal name..." and could not reopen the script window after closing it. The update window showed new help files but I did not download them.
2. Later at work (different PC) there was no command error and the update window again showed new help files. But halfway through the download Origin quit with the following runtime error:
Program: C:\OriginLab\OriginPro75\Origin75.exe This application has requested Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Still can't update the help files. A run time error always occurs when the progress bar passes 50%.
Have the help files really changed within last month? I remember updating the Labview VI examples in January. That was all that showed up in Check for updates at the time.
...The run time error leaves a new file called Origin_TMP.chm in the Help folder. I bypassed Check for Updates by downloading the help files from the Documentation Center. They are dated 1/30/2004 which is more recent than those already in my Help folder.

This is still a problem in Origin 7.5 SR2. I downloaded SR2 from the OriginLab's web site and after installing it ran Check for Updates to get the new Help files. Another run-time error resulted so I downloaded the Help files from the web site too.

Hi Mike:
I'm not sure what is going on here. The fact that you've had problems on two PCs is troubling.
What I think I would do first is this: Remove all of the .chm files (you can leave the Multimedia (MMD) files as we don't update those) from the \Help folder, then rerun Check for Updates. You should get a list of all English language Help files. Do a "Get Updates" and see what you get.
Let me know how it goes.

Hi Mike,
Check for Updates worked fine after I moved the help files. I'm not sure what's going on here but thanks for the suggestion. I'll try the same thing if I run into problems later.
...I've noticed that help files that are downloaded from OriginLab's web site are marked Read-only whereas those obtained by Check for Updates are not. I had downloaded my SR1 help files from the web site in December. So I replaced the SR2 help files with the older SR1 (Read-only) files and got a run-time error when I ran Check for Updates. Removing the Read-only attribute from all SR1 help files fixed the problem.

I don't know what happened either, but I'm glad to hear that you "fixed" the problem. We did have a Check for Updates bug in 75SR0 that caused Origin to download some 0 byte files that would crash on opening. The prescription there, as in your case, was to wipe out the old files and rerun Check for Updates.
Your observation about the "read-only" files got me looking at various Help files that I had on my machine and I did notice that some were marked read-only while others were not. Knowing that I had not consciously set this property one way or the other, I thought for a moment and realized that our "Source Safe" software was setting the files as read-only when I checked them in at the end of the day. Those Help files that were not marked read-only probably didn't go through Source Safe before being uploaded to the Check for Updates folder. I don't know what effect this could have, but I will try to be more mindful of it in the future.

Hi Godwich,
If you are running German Origin on a German Operating System (OS), indeed the Help files should be copied to your \Help folder. However, if you are running German Origin on an English OS, the Help files would have to be installed to the \Localization\English subfolder of your Origin software folder. Normally, this is handled by Check for Updates, but it sounds as though Origin crashed during the update and so it was not completed.
If you need a fresh download of the English Origin 7.5 Help Files, you can get them here. Included in this ZIP file is a ReadMe.txt file that instructs you as to where the files should be extracted, depending upon your OS.
Let us know if you are still having problems. Sorry for the inconvenience.
