I want to replace a plot with data from a different worksheet. I can only get it to work with data from the same worksheet. In the Plot Setup dialog box I can't select a plot (bottom panel) and a different worksheet (top panel) at the same time. Is there some way to do this?

Using OriginPro 7.5. This was easier in previous versions.

Thanks,
Mike

You need to open the top panel, in the 3 panel mode, you can
1, select the plot in the bottom panel, then the plot appear in the middle panel
2. select from the top panel worksheet again
3. the Replace button enabled and allow the plot in the bottom panel to be replaced.

If you want to use the old interface, you just need to Cntrl-double-click the layer icon, or right-click layer icon and select Layer Contents.

Hi prime,

Admittedly, the Plot Setup dialog takes a bit of getting used to -- especially if you were fond of the old Layern dialog box.

I should point out that when you are in the Plot Setup dialog box (or most any Origin dialog box, for that matter), you can hit the F1 key and get Help with the active dialog box. In this instance, F1 opens the Origin Help file to the topic The Plot Setup Dialog Box with info on using Plot Setup to create a simple graph, add plots to a specific graph template, add, remove or replace plots in an existing graph, etc.

Also -- and this may interest you -- there is a note at the bottom of this topic that explains how to restore the "old behavior" of opening the Layern dialog box by double-clicking on the graph layer icon.

Make sure that you have the Origin 7.5 SR4 Help file for the latest info (select Help:Check for Updates if your Origin Help file does not say SR4 in the title bar).

Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to reply. Getting to the old interface works for me, so I am functional. However, I still can't get it to work with the Plot Setup dialog, and I would like to learn.

cpyang, I followed your instructions. I select the plot in the bottom panel and the plot appears in the middle panel and the Replace button is enabled. If I then select a different worksheet in the top panel, the plot in the bottom panel is automatically unselected and the Replace button is gone. I can find no way to have a plot selected in the bottom panel at the same time a different worksheet is selected in the top.

Mike, I do have the SR-4 help file. I had looked at the help and even gone through the tutorial successfully. However, the tutorial only illustrates replacing data with data from the same worksheet.

Thanks,
Prime

Hi Prime,

The following works:
1> Right-click on the data plot in the bottom panel and select Remove from the context menu
2> Go to the top most panel and select the new worksheet
3> Go to the middle panel and do the dataset assignments to X, Y etc
4> Click the Add button to add this new data plot to the layer in the bottom panel
5> Optionally check the "rescale" checkbox, and click OK

Hi Prime,

I was wondering why you were replacing one dataset in a graph with another in this manner. If you are looking to just create a graph for the second dataset that looks very similar to the first graph, have you tried using templates and/or themes?

Hi Easwar,

Thanks. Yes, I am bascially trying to create an identical graph with a new data set. For making just one or two identical graphs, I had previously found just replacing the plots to be quick. I think I will take your advice and work with a template or theme.

Hi prime,

This may have been lost in all of the discussion, but the Layern dialog remains in Origin 7.5. If you haven't changed your @LID variable to "1", just hold down the ALT key when you double-click on the graph layer icon. From there, you will be able to add and remove plots in the same way that you are used to and your plot format settings should be preserved (at least they were in the test that I did).

Hi guys,

nice you had this topic on already so I skip explaing my problem. I also find the replace option a lot quicker than building a template, so I would like to take this up again:
As prime pointed out, replacing a graph with data from a different worksheet is not possible. The remove/add option has one problem that I would like to avoid: if you removed one dataset and then added another from a different worksheet you lose your format settings. So the use of the replace button would be a nice solution, if it justed worked. But it doesn't. Any comment?

Hi Claas:

We suspect that you do not yet have the latest Origin 7.5 Service Release (SR6). The problem that you describe was fixed some time ago. To update your Origin software go to the appropriate page on the OriginLab website and get Service Release 6.

English Origin
German Origin
Japanese Origin

If, after patching, you find that you are still having problems, please let us know. Thanks.
