Origin Version : 7.5
Operating System: Windows XP Pro SP2

Whenever I change my plot style from Line+Symbol to Scatter, the symbol gets reset to a filled-in square, regardless of what the symbol was originally. How can I stop this behavior?

You need to create a template with mixed style holders.

Plot two Y columns using your own template or the standard Line+Symbol or Scatter plot.
Right-click the Layer1 icon and choose Layer Contents.
Click on the data in Layer Contents list then click Ungroup.
Click OK.
Double-click on the plotted data. (Opens Plot Details)
Select one dataset and make its Plot Type Scatter.
Edit the symbol properties the way you like.
Select the other dataset and make its Plot Type Line+Symbol.
Edit the symbol properties to match the first dataset.
Click OK.
Now select File : Save Template As .. to save your Template.

When you plot a dataset with this Template, the style will be whatever was the first plotted data when you edited in Plot Details. If you now click the Scatter Plot button and the Line+Symbol Plot button alternately, you will see the desired effect. Note that the same thing cannot be done by opening Plot Details and changing Plot Type, because the Plot Details dialog will create a new Style Holder out of default values.
