I recently ungraded from Origin 7.5 to the Pro 8.0 version. When I started working with the new version I was really happy to see all the improvements in version 8.0. However, this initial happiness quickly turned into annoyance when I started using the program extensively. The new version is much, much less responsive on my PC running Windows XP than the older 7.5 version. Are there maybe some parameters that have been set that might cause this slowdown, or is this the price one has to pay for the improvements?

I've found the same thing. I just upgraded today from 7.5, and am checking the forums for help. Version 8 Pro seems excessively buggy- feels more like a beta than a final release. In addition to the responsiveness issues (for example doing a 'paste transpose' on a single 512 element row to column can take several minutes) I've found the following issues:

1) double clicking to open an origin file in a folder works only about 85% of the time. The remaining 15% of the time I get cryptic error messages (which I will start logging) and Origin does not launch.

2) I've had origin 8 pro crash 3 times, while doing minor tasks (the paste transpose described above) and a linear fit of 4 data points. I'm not getting error messages- the program just closes, so I don't know what is happening.

3) In general, 8Pro is excessively slow, and I haven't even tried to do any complicated tasks I normally do and I am working with much smaller datasets than usual. While some of the new features seem cool- like the surface fits, I cannot imagine that it is actually practical to do, given the slow speed.

4) Origin made me generate a flexIm license file, but refused to do it automatically. Despite having an internet connection, generating a license file repeatedly failed (on multiple days), so I had to claim that the computer lacked an internet connection and do it manually. I had thought that personal copies didn't require flexIm, but I do have another copy of origin 7.5 on this machine that does use flexim, so I thought maybe the issue arose from that. However, given all the other bugs, I figured I might as well throw that in as well.

I'm running Windows XP (service pack 2) Tablet edition.

I hope there are some solutions or a patch in the works. Improvements aren't useful if you cannot actually use them!

Hi Marcel and Louise,

Are you seeing slower performance on same machine between 7.5 and 8.0?

When i try this with 7.5 and 8.0 on same machine, I see no difference in performance...when pasting transpose into a default worksheet, it takes about 2 seconds (time taken to add 500 more cols)

So I am wondering if there are some machine-specific issues you are encountering. Best would be you contact your tech support representatives so they can work with you one-on-one to find out what it is that is causing this problem on your machines.

I'm using the same machine. However, I found today that the default option to autosave is every 5 minutes for my newly installed 8Pro. This accounts for the 'paste transpose' problem that I saw... if you happen to try this when the autosave kicks in, then everything stops.

I've set the autosave to 20 minutes, and things are running better. I have also only had one crash today, which is a dramatic improvement over yesterday.

So, for the original poster, I would recommend checking this setting. It is found under "tools, options, open/close". Also, watch and see if the autosave is coming on when things get slow (see the bottom of the origin screen. it says 'autosaving file blah' when it does)

I have found several other issues in this version, but I will contact tech support about them.
