Origin Ver. 8 SR4
I guess I found a bug which I wish was a feature.
Steps to reproduce it:
1. for several columns name first row with the same name (ABC)
2. Set this row as a short name
Now you got several columns with the same names and Origin does not mind. I can even plot them.
The problem is that I cannot add them to the graph layer from the layer menu (Layer Contents) because they have the same short name.

P.S.: This "feature" resembles one bug I found in previous version of Origin (7.5) and now it is back. Life indeed goes in circles.
