Origin Ver. and Service Release (Select Help-->About Origin): 8.5
Operating System: Win XP 32
Hi,
I have two questions concerning the axis labels of an Origin graph:
1) Is it possible to use different colors for some letters? (same with to different fonts!)
2) In a histogram plot I have to write the chemical names, which are quite long sometimes - is it possible to put a break into the names in such a way, that they use two lines instead of one? Right now I always delete the axis label and use text fields instead, but that is not that practical... I get the data in a spreadsheet file with the names and layout in the first column...
These "escape sequences" are quite unpractical...

Hi,
Do you mean you have version 8 SR5? If yes, SR6 is the latest service release. Also we just released 8.1 and you may want to see what is new.
In both 8.0 and 8.1 if your labels come from a column (it appears that is what you have) in the worksheet cell you can press ctrl-enter to start a new line so that is the way to enter multiple lines in the worksheet. Then when that column is used as label, the label will also show them as multiple lines.
The font and color if changed in the worksheet does not carry thru to the label, so that could be something we can look into for the future. Right now there does not appear to be a way to change the color and font of just some labels for the graph.

You could change colors/fonts in in-place edit mode. Then these formattings will be carried over into graph axis titles. Try this:
1. Worksheet Units cells are rich-formattable by default. Simply double click, select some letter, and change its color using Format toolbar Font Color control.
2. Now if you plot this column, units should display colored letter on the graph without additional work.
3. If you need the same functionality for Long Name, you first need to change cell type to Rich-text. |

Hi,
In your case looks like you have text labels that come from a worksheet column (and not from long name or units). So first thing you need to do is press F4 on the worksheet to bring up the Worksheet Properties dialog, and then switch to Format tab, and set the Apply To drop-down to Data. Then check the Rich Text check box. This enables the cells to support Rich Text.
Then you can double click cells to enter in-place editing, select parts of the text and change format etc and also use CTRL-Enter for new line, and then all those formatting will show up on graph. Note that this only works with in-place editing. If you click and select entire cell and format, it does not work.

Hi,
Thank you very much for the hints and help! "CRTL + ENTER" as well as "Rich text" are just what I needed to know!
There is one more thing: if I use CRTL+Enter, I get the label in two lines, but the spacing/layout is not optimal. The first line of the two lines is at the same place as the former long one, the second line follows behind, but these two lines are not moved to the left or separated from the other labels:
So sometimes it is difficult to recognize at once which label belongs to which data set (is it VeryVery-LongWord or is it LongWord-LongWord?). Is there a way to change the alignment of single labels in respect to the other labels?

Hi,
Currently can only drag and move all labels together, not adjust their positions individuallys. Thanks for the suggestion, we will look into improving the placement in future. Maybe for now using angle of 90 degrees will result in least confusion?

Well, I think I will just omit the very long labels and add them manually in a text box!
