Origin Ver. and Service Release (Select Help-->About Origin): 8.5.1 SR1
Operating System:Windows 7
Dear all:
I have a problem doing Matrix differentiation.
I convert my worksheet (with X, Y, and Z) to Matrix through XYZ grinding and plot the results as a contour map. I plan to do differentiation on my matrix, however, I can not do that. How can I do matrix differentiation (or gradient) in Origin 8.5?

Thanks for help!

What I plan to do is plot contour map through matrix. Then plot the differentiate result. My friend can do this in origin 8pro. However, Origin 8.5pro don't allow me to do that. Anybody know how to do it?

Hi,

We do not have a tool to perform differentiation of matrix currently in Origin. Perhaps your friend was using some custom code to perform the computation?

We will consider this for future version.

Hi JerryLin,

Origin 8.5 has (at least) one difference between Origin 8.

In O8.5, the matrix output will be "locked", see attached image.

The lock refers to Origin's Recalculate feature.

For example, when source XYZ data changes, the output matrix can automatically calculate/update to fit the new data.

See more introduction on Recalculate in Origin.chm, like:
User Guide - Getting Start Booklet - Introduction to Origin - Operations and Recalculation

User Guide - Common Analysis Features - Origins Analysis Dialog Boxes - Recalculating Analysis Results

In O8, such a lock is not available on that convert tool, so you can do any subsequent operation on the output matrix directly.

In O8.5, the output is locked by default, so you "fail" to modify the matrix values directly: for example, if you type any values in a cell, its value will turn back to the original one.

If you want to disable this "feature", you can set the Recalculate mode to be None in dialog or context menu.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for minimax's suggestions.
I try your method and play with "lock" and "unlock" function on the matrix and worksheet both. However, it still doesn't work.

But I still appreciate your and everybody's help.

Thanks everyone.

As Easwar suggests, maybe you could first check with your friend what manipulation in Origin has been done?

And Origin does not have built-in matrix gradient yet.
