Origin Ver. and Service Release (Select Help-->About Origin): Origin Pro 9.0.0 45b (Academic)
Operating System:Windows

I draw a line graph. I wish to add another line from different data in a separate Book.

I open the already drawn graph, right click on the top left hand corner icon, and go to layer contents. Here, I find the data I want and insert it by clicking the left to right arrow.

Often the new line will only have the option to be displayed as text. I would like a line, or line and symbol but it will ONLY allow text.

What can I do???

Hi,

After you added the dataset to the right panel of Layer Contents, you can click the Plot Type cell and specify the type of it.

If somehow Layer Contents fails to do what you want, you may go to Plot Setup to add it. (Graph: Plot Setup or click the button in Layer Contents)

You can highlight the side of the new data column and then drag it into existing graph.
This video should be helpful to you to see different ways to add, remove, reorder and remove plots.
