Can one display both positive only, negative only, and positive&negative y errors on the same data set within one plot? I have several line plots wherein I only want single direction error for some of the points and in many cases this needs to alternate between + and - to avoid bars from other data on the same plot. I've tried changing my error values to - or + in the worksheet, but this seems to have no effect.

Hi Mark,
You can have some error bars as positive and some as negative at the same time, but it seems not possible to also have some go positive and negative as well in the same data plot.
To get some error bars to go negative and some to go positive, enter positive and negative values for errors in the error column, make your plot, and then go to Plot Details dialog (rt-click on plot and pick Plot Details). Then pick the error dataset in the left navigation tree. You will now see an Error tab on the right, and under Direction, both Plus and Minus will be checked. Uncheck Plus or Minus and then click Apply/OK.

Doesn't this sound a bit contradictory? I assume you mean error bars on one line can be negative, while those on another line can be positive, but you can't mix and match on the same line. I find it hard to believe that this feature is not available on a program that costs this much, not to mention all the other competing programs allow for this function...anyone at Origin HQ listening?

Hi Mark,
You can have both positive-only and negative-only error bars in the same YEr column by setting things up as explained by Easwar. His point is that once the YEr column is set up that way you can't have error bars in it that go both positive and negative. The workaround is to create a second YEr column for the +/- error bars and set all other errors in that column to zero. You'll also need to set the +/- error bars in the first YEr column to zero.

Origin supports multiple error bars per data plot, so add another column to worksheet and set it as Y error, like assume Data1 worksheet, and
A(x) B(y) C(yErr) D(yErr)
then add data1_d to the layer as well. You should then see layer contents with
data1_b
data1_c
data1_d
then set Data1_C as Plus and Data1_D as Minus on Error Bar tab and adjust the values in worksheet accordingly, namely to put same positive values into C and D if you want both directions, and put zero in the direction that you don't want to show.

The method you described in reply to mwarner is very good.
But in Origin 7.0 (and earlier) one could select an individual error bar by CNRL+ left-double clicking and modify the +/- options for the error bar.
Isn't this method available in Origin 7.5 anymore?

Yes, it looks like it is not possible to customize a single error bar in 7.5. This is trackered in our database as QA#6372 and we will work on addressing this in the next service release.

Is it? What version of Origin do you use?
I have confirmed that the bug persists in my copy of Origin which I believe is the newest English version (OriginPro 7.5SR2 v. 7.5817 B817).
